As I finally made my last step to the rocky ledge, I stopped and put my hands on my knees and started my
recovery breathing.
I looked around me to see the snow capped Rockies, a picture of perfection, the smell of aspen leaves beneath my feet, and then could feel the seat dripping off my chin as I continued to look at my feet, my day pack and web gear quickly were undone and fell to the ground. The thoughts that raced through my mind were, Why am I doing this? What if I get an animal up here? Oh, boy! I was beginning to think..hmm, this time last year, I was exhausted and sat down for what seemed hours, but not now, I'm ready to go.
Now, I realized all the walking I had done During the summer, was starting to pay off.
I felt confident and pleased to see the improvement over lasts years' hunt.
I knew that the physical aspect had changed, it was the same location but the amount of time it took to get to my stand improved, I felt so much better, and now I was a physically confidant hunter.
I feel the importance of knowing your limitations can not be stressed enough. Many individuals are
missing out on some incredible opportunities to hunt and get into the high country, simply because the lack of physical conditioning. That's tragic!
The purpose of this column is to help educate you in the proper ways of exercising and regaining your
aerobic abilities.
This will take time and I want to stress that! Your weight gain and lack of physical conditioning was not lost overnight, it took time for that to happen. I also want to stress the importance of seeing your family Doctor prior to beginning any exercise program. It is wise to be cleared in case you have some underlying problem.
