I used treestands for hunting whitetail deer, bear and elk. TheyŽre a great tool for ambushing deer and other animals. It permits you to see approaching game, itŽs easier to move to shoot without detection and your scent is above ground.

Although Treestands are a handy tool, if you donŽt apply hunting techniques, youŽll experience failure when using them. IŽve made mistakes like hunting from my stand when the wind direction was wrong, taking the incorrect route to my stand and walking on game trails to reach my stand.

Whenever the wind is swirling or blowing from your stand to bedding areas or toward trails that deer travel, donŽt hunt that stand. In fact, have several locations selected and stands erected for varied wind conditions.  The youŽll have a place to hunt when the wind changes.

As you approach your stand, avoid walking on game trails and touching vegetation.  Otherwise, youŽll leave your scent and this will spook deer causing them to move to another area.

If deer are feeding in an area and you spook them as you approach you stand, you have eliminated a chance to hunt them.  Take the time and effort to circle such areas, so as you approach, you wonŽt alarm the deer and the wind will flow from them to you.

IŽve made these mistakes.  I know from experience that youŽll have more success if you pay attention to wind direction, avoid spooking deer and consider how you approach your treestand.

Good Luck and Good Hunting!
